How to demonstrate a website

Equipment

When talking to your contact teacher prior to your visit, find out what equipment will be available to you. Ideally, you will be able to have access to an interactive whiteboard.

If you have not used an interactive whiteboard before, do not worry. They are simply a means of demonstrating a website on a large screen by using an electronic pen or your finger in place of a mouse. The contact teacher will be able to demonstrate online navigation using this process in a matter of minutes.

If an interactive whiteboard is not available, all schools should have access to a projector and large screen or sufficiently clear wall space.

It is possible that students may also be able to follow your progress through the site on an individual PC or working around a computer in small groups.

Instructions

Websites can often seem confusing when students first start to use them. Although the Faraday 08 website has been designed very logically, with clear navigation menus across the top and sides, students will need time to acclimatise themselves to the layout.

For this reason, you should articulate every action you take before you do it, as you do it and then after it is complete. For example:

“From the Home page, I move my cursor to the top left hand corner of the tool bar and choose ‘World water’.

"I click on ‘World water’".

"And that takes me through to the film screen that you see here.”

If you can get into the habit of talking through the process as you do it, you won’t confuse or lose your audience.

It is important that you find your own style of delivery. We would not want to dictate how you introduce the Faraday 08 website to students. However, the next section may provide some useful ideas to help get you started.

Top tip

As all topics follow the same format, you only need to demonstrate highlights from one. Therefore, although you should have an idea of the information and activities contained within each topic, you only need to know one really well. You can then select excerpts from that topic to demonstrate to the students.
